Learning objectives

  • Identify and prioritise automatable processes based on value, risk and complexity.
  • Master triggers, actions, webhooks, API calls and JSON data transformation.
  • Build complete workflows in n8n and Make, and translate the same logic to Zapier.
  • Set up error handling, execution logs and alerts.
  • Choose a platform based on hosting, confidentiality, cost and available skills.

By the end of this course, you will be able to identify which processes are worth automating, model them, and build reliable workflows with n8n, Make or Zapier: triggers, data transformation, conditions, error handling and documentation.

We start with process mapping, because a poorly understood process leads to fragile automation. You then learn the concepts shared by all three platforms (triggers, actions, webhooks, APIs, JSON) before building concrete scenarios: form processing, syncing a CRM with a spreadsheet, internal notifications and document generation.

The course also covers how to choose a platform: hosting (cloud or self-hosted for n8n), data location, pricing model, required skills and maintainability. You finish with a project based on a real process from your own work, delivered with documentation and a monitoring plan.

Who it is for

  • Operations managers, executive assistants and project managers.
  • Marketing and sales teams that move a lot of data between tools.
  • Business owners who want to cut repetitive admin work.
  • Technical profiles new to no-code / low-code automation.

Prerequisites

  • Comfortable with office software and web applications (spreadsheet, email, CRM or similar).
  • Basic logic ("if… then…" conditions); no programming skills required.
  • A laptop and the ability to create free or trial accounts on the platforms covered.

Skills you will gain

  • Process mapping
  • Workflow design
  • Webhooks and REST APIs
  • JSON data handling
  • Error handling and monitoring
  • Technical documentation
  • Evaluating automation platforms

Programme

  1. Identifying and mapping processes

    3 h
    • Spotting repetitive tasks and duplicate data entry
    • Mapping a process: steps, people, data, exceptions
    • Prioritising: time saved, frequency, error risk, complexity
    • Deciding what must remain a human decision
  2. Shared fundamentals

    4 h
    • Triggers, actions, filters and routers
    • Webhooks, REST APIs, authentication and access keys
    • Data structures: JSON, arrays, nested fields
    • Side-by-side overview of n8n, Make and Zapier
  3. Building with n8n

    4 h
    • Interface, nodes and expressions
    • Workflow from a web form to a CRM and a spreadsheet
    • Loops, aggregation and conditions
    • Cloud or self-hosted: practical implications
  4. Building with Make and Zapier

    4 h
    • Scenarios, modules and data mapping in Make
    • Multi-step Zaps and conditional paths in Zapier
    • Translating one process from one platform to another
    • Understanding operation or task consumption
  5. Reliability, security and cost

    3 h
    • Error handling, retries and failure notifications
    • Logging and execution monitoring
    • Access and secret management, personal data
    • Estimating and controlling the running cost of a workflow
  6. Applied project

    3 h
    • Choosing a real process from your work
    • Design, build and testing
    • Writing documentation and a maintenance plan
    • Presentation and feedback

Exercises and projects

  • Map a process from your work and extract the steps that can be automated.
  • Build a workflow that receives a web form, enriches the data and creates a CRM contact with a team notification.
  • Rebuild the same workflow on a second platform and compare readability, maintenance and consumption.
  • Add an error-handling branch with an email or chat alert.
  • Final project: automate a real process, with documentation and a monitoring checklist.
