Learning objectives

  • Consume REST APIs robustly: authentication, pagination, rate limits, retries.
  • Design and document a simple REST API with OpenAPI.
  • Receive and process webhooks securely and idempotently.
  • Integrate an AI model through an API with structured outputs and cost control.
  • Apply security best practices: secrets, input validation, logging, personal data.
  • Test and monitor integrations in production.

By the end of this course, you will be able to design and build integrations with third-party APIs (payment, CRM, messaging, email) and AI model APIs in a web application: authentication, error handling, webhooks, secret management and cost control.

The course is firmly hands-on. Examples are given in JavaScript (Node.js) and PHP, the two environments we come across most often in web projects; participants work in the language of their choice. We cover consuming REST APIs, exposing a clean, documented API, receiving reliable webhooks and orchestrating asynchronous processing.

The last third is devoted to integrating a language model through an API: structuring calls, JSON outputs, tool calling, limiting costs, caching, protection against prompt injection and logging. The final project is to add an AI-assisted feature to an existing or provided application.

Who it is for

  • Junior and experienced web developers.
  • Freelance developers who build integrations for clients.
  • SME technical teams connecting their business tools.
  • Final-year computer science students.

Prerequisites

  • Hands-on web development experience in JavaScript, PHP or Python.
  • Basic knowledge of HTTP, JSON and Git.
  • A computer with a working development environment (editor, Node.js or PHP, Git).

Skills you will gain

  • REST APIs and HTTP
  • OAuth 2.0 and API keys
  • Webhooks
  • OpenAPI
  • Asynchronous jobs and queues
  • AI model API integration
  • Application security
  • Integration testing

Programme

  1. HTTP refresher and REST design

    4 h
    • Methods, status codes, headers, idempotency
    • Resources, URLs and API versioning
    • Reading API documentation efficiently
    • Tools: HTTP clients, request collections
  2. Consuming third-party APIs

    5 h
    • Authentication: API keys, OAuth 2.0, tokens
    • Pagination, rate limits and retries with backoff
    • Error and timeout handling
    • Case study: CRM, email service, messaging
  3. Exposing your own API

    5 h
    • Designing endpoints and formats
    • Input validation and error messages
    • OpenAPI documentation
    • Authentication and access control
  4. Webhooks and asynchronous processing

    5 h
    • Receiving a webhook: signature verification, fast response
    • Idempotency and duplicate handling
    • Queues and background jobs
    • Orchestration with a tool such as n8n where it makes sense
  5. Integrating an AI model

    5 h
    • Calling a model API: messages, parameters, model choice
    • Structured JSON outputs and validation
    • Tool calling and chaining steps
    • Costs: tokens, caching, per-user limits
    • Risks: prompt injection, data leakage, inaccurate answers
  6. Going to production and project

    4 h
    • Secret and environment management
    • Integration tests and API mocks
    • Logging, monitoring and alerts
    • Final project: presentation and code review

Exercises and projects

  • Write a robust API client with pagination, retries and rate-limit handling.
  • Design and document with OpenAPI a small API for managing contact requests.
  • Implement a webhook receiver with signature verification and duplicate protection.
  • Integrate an AI model that classifies incoming messages and returns validated JSON.
  • Final project: add an AI-assisted feature to an application, with tests, logging and a cost estimate.
